The United States Wheelchair Rugby League team was invited by the International Rugby League to participate in the 2022 RL World Cup in England. Due to the efforts of several individuals, team tryouts and practices began in late 2020 for team selection. The team was based in Columbia, SC. Following many months of practice and skills building, a team was selected to represent the US.
At the World Cup, the US played Scotland, world third ranked Wales, and number one France. Despite playing the first ever competitive international game, the US beat Scotland 62-41. In the second game, the US had the first half lead but the experience of Wales saw the Wheelhawks go down 32-50. The final game was of great experience for the US but France was way too strong. However, one of our players , Mackenzie Johnson, was selected in the 10 member Team of the Tournament, a huge honor.
In February 2024, the US played Wales in two Internationals in Mrytle Beach, SC.
The USA Wheelhawks are preparing to compete in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
This event will be held in Australia in October/November 2026. In addition to the Wheelchair event, Men and Women's Open Rugby League will also be played. At this point, six teams have qualified for the wheelchair tournament- France, Australia, England, Wales, New Zealand and the United States, with two teams to be added.
The US Wheelhawks will be training and recruiting players throughout 2025 and 2026 with the view of competing in the World Cup and establishing a domestic competition across the US.
We have certified coaches, fitness staff and certified Athletic Trainers. A team manager will be appointed for the World Cup and a social media manager will ensure much publicity is generated.
The USA Wheelhawks participate in International competition in conjunction with the US Association of Rugby League (USARL). The USARL is the National Governing body of rugby league in the United States working with all forms of rugby league, including mens, womens, wheelchair, and youth.
